School challenges - showing what he knows?
We have finished five weeks of school. We had a six-week review of how things are going this past Monday. Yes, doing the math, that was only 4-weeks in. This school year James is enjoying being a fifth-grader in more mainstreamed classes. If he had his way he would be in all mainstreamed. He still has his one-on-one to help him stay focused.
The challenge we have is getting him to demonstrate what he knows in school. When he does work at home, he knows he needs to do his best effort or redo the work. Reading and just circling answers, or not even reading a passage or question and answering said question does not cut it. Getting the right answer in math without showing work is also not acceptable when I am around.
What he is doing in school, is an entirely different story. He recently had a social studies vocabulary test with an abominable score, considering he had been demonstrating 100% accuracy at home for several days prior to the test. The test was all matching and multiple choice. I forced him to write complete sentences correcting every question he had gotten incorrect. He then had to turn them in to his teacher. If they were not written neatly enough, I made him redo it. I am trying hard to teach him that it is best to just do it the right way the first time.
Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated. He does not care about grades, so that does not work as an incentive.
